Nikolsk ( Russian Никольск) is a settlement in Mukhorshibir Rajon ( Republic of Buryatia , Russia ). It has 1,302 inhabitants (as of 2013).
founding
The settlement was founded by the Cossack Nikolai, who was expelled from his homeland because of an offense and was supposed to live in the forest in Muchorschibir Rajon. With the help of Buryats he built a house, on the facade of which he engraved the year 1737 with a knife.
Buildings
The Ethnographic Museum of Transbaikaliens houses the Church of St. Nicholas from Nikolsk. This was one of the museum's first exhibits.
Population development
The population of Nikolsk is declining: According to official records, 1519 people lived in the settlement in 2002, compared to 1474 in 2012.
