Nils-Eric Ringbom
Nils-Eric Ringbom (born December 27, 1907 in Turku , † February 13, 1988 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish composer , musicologist , music critic and music manager .
Life
Nils-Eric Ringbom studied violin with Leo Funtek at the Helsinki University of Music and musicology at the Åbo Akademi with Otto Andersson , where he received his doctorate in 1955 with a dissertation on problems of program music . As a violinist, he was a member of the Åbo Philharmonic Orchestra between 1927 and 1933. From 1938 he worked as a librarian at the Helsingin kaupunginorkesteri (Helsinki Philharmonic) and became its managing director in 1943. He carried out this activity until his retirement in 1970. From 1951 to 1960 he directed the Sibelius Festival, from 1966 to 1971 the Helsinki Festival and in 1964 and 1965 the Sibelius Violin Competition . He was a member of the board of directors of the Finnish Academy of Music, the Sibelius Academy .
Ringbom was one of the founders of the Finnish section of the International Society for New Music (IGNM) and the Suomen Säveltäjät (Finnish Association of Composers). He wrote music reviews for the Swedish-language newspapers in Finland.
Ringbom composed, among other things, five symphonies and an orchestral suite, and in 1952 his wind sextet was performed at the IGNM conference in Salzburg .
