Act

Artificial kidney from 1944

The first artificial kidney developed by Willem Johan Kolff was unsuitable for clinical use because the excess fluid could not be removed. Alwall developed a similar construction, but it was enclosed in a stainless steel container. The liquid could be withdrawn by negative pressure in the container. The first patient was treated on September 3, 1946.

From 1957 he held the newly created chair of nephrology at Lund University . Alwall worked for Gambro from 1964. The company was founded by Holger Crafoord after Alwall had convinced him of the economic potential of his development.
