Nils Becker

Nils Becker (born June 19, 1966 in Hanover ) is a former German basketball player . During his professional career, the 2.08 tall center player was among other things in the squad of the Bundesliga club Bayreuth and played five international A matches for Germany.

Career

Born in Hanover, he played for the Grossburgwedel gymnastics club as a teenager . In 1983 he took part with the German U16 national team in the European Cadet Championship in his own country and won the bronze medal with the selection of the German Basketball Federation . In six tournaments he scored an average of 5.3 points. A year later he was part of the German squad for the European Junior Championships in Sweden: Becker recorded an average of 6.9 points in seven games and ended up in fifth place with the German team. His tournament best was twelve points in a duel with Spain.

In 1985 he moved to Santa Clara University (US state California ). There he was Jens-Uwe Gordon's teammate . Becker's best season for the "Broncos" was also his last: In 1989/90 he averaged 11.0 points and 6.7 rebounds.

In 1989 he won bronze at the Universiade with the German student selection .

Most of his subsequent professional career he spent with Bundesliga club Steiner Bayreuth (later renamed Basket Bayreuth), with whom he repeatedly advanced to the playoff semi-finals and quarter-finals for the German championship and where he acted as team captain. During his time in Bayreuth, Becker was also a senior international and played a total of five senior internationals between 1991 and 1994.

After the bankruptcy of the club in 1999, he left Upper Franconia for Lower Saxony and moved to TSV Quakenbrück , where he played in the 2nd Bundesliga for two years.

After his professional career, Becker continued to play basketball and took part in championships with the Bayreuth senior teams. Sometimes he also helped out at Bayreuth's second men's team in the regional league when he was over 45.
