Nina Buchmann

Nina Buchmann (born July 18, 1965 in Heidelberg ) is a German geoecologist .

biography

Buchmann studied geoecology at the University of Bayreuth from 1984 to 1989 . She did her PhD in plant ecology in 1993 with Ernst-Detlef Schulze and spent the next three years as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City with Jim Ehleringer. In 1996 she returned to Germany and qualified as a professor in 1999 at the University of Bayreuth in botany. During her time (1999–2003) at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena(Germany), she led her own research group and was appointed Minerva group leader in 2001. Nina Buchmann has been a full professor of grassland sciences at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences since April 2003 , from 2011 to 2017 she was head of the World Food System Center at ETH Zurich and since August 2012 Vice-Head of Department and since August 2017 Head of the Department for environmental systems science at the ETH Zurich , Switzerland.

Research work

Buchmann's research focuses on (1) the ecophysiology of plants and ecosystems, (2) the biogeochemistry of terrestrial ecosystems, and (3) the interrelationships between biodiversity, ecosystem functions and sustainable use of resources.
