Nina Nastasia is an American singer and songwriter .

Life

Nastasia grew up in Hollywood and is now based in New York . After starting songwriting in the early 1990s, Nina Nastasia released her first album, Dogs, on the tiny Socialist Records label in 2000 , recorded by Steve Albini . Only 1500 copies were originally produced and Nastasia put the packaging together in her apartment herself. At the end of the year the album was sold out, but the well-known English disc jockey John Peel had received a copy of Dogs from Albini and played it several times in his shows on BBC Radio 1 . Thanks to the help of Peel and Albini, who in several interviews touted Dogs as one of the best albums he had recorded, the album gained cult status even though it was not commercially available.

The American punk label Touch and Go became aware of Nastasia through Dogs and released their next two albums, The Blackened Air (2002) and Run to Ruin (2003). The debut album Dogs was also re-released in 2004. Then Nastasia moved to the English label FatCat Records , and in 2006 her fourth album On Leaving was released there, like all previous ones recorded with Steve Albini. Since Run to Ruin Nastasia had with the Australian drummer Jim White of Dirty Three worked. While working on On Leaving , White suggested to Nastasia to collaborate on an album. The collaboration led to the album You Follow Me (2007), based only on guitar and drums, and a song on the 2008 single "What She Doesn't Know".

Nastasia recorded a total of six of the well-known "Peel Sessions" for John Peel, the last of which with the Tuvan throat singing group Huun-Huur-Tu . Two of Nastasia's songs appeared in Peel's "Festive Fifty" annual charts: "Ugly Face", in fourth place in 2002 and "You, Her & Me" in thirteenth place in 2003. After his death, Nastasia dedicated the song "Bird of Cuzco" "Peel's memory.
