Nine (born September 9, 1969 in New York ; real name Derrick Keyes ) is an American rapper . The stage name refers to his date of birth (September 9, 1969), his shoe size (US size 9) and his lucky number.

biography

Musically, Nine can be assigned to the so-called " East Coast " scene, which was characterized by strong jazz influences in the 1990s . His extremely deep, smoky voice is typical of him. The Bronx-born musician, who initially called himself “Nine Double M” or “9 Double M”, became known in 1993 for his guest contribution to Funkmaster Flex's track Six Million Ways to Die . In 1991 he was already heard on his FALLIN (And You Can't Get Up) .

Then a record contract was signed with the now defunct Priority Records label. The debut album Nine Livez was released in 1995 and, like the previously released single Whutcha Want? , middle placements in the Billboard charts, but the big success did not materialize. The 1996 album Cloud 9 did not bring the desired breakthrough either.

Then Nine retired from the music business for a few years and devoted himself to other activities, including playing a supporting role in the television series NY Undercover a criminal. In the second half of the 2000s, Nine returned to the business and released several albums. Today his albums are largely out of print, they were only produced in very small numbers and have been “out of print” for a long time.

In 2013 Nine could be heard alongside Ferris MC on the track Freakshow by the German rapper Eko Fresh . The song was not released as a single and was only part of the feature EP that came with the album Eksodus .
