Nissen or Nissen-Benzon is a Danish family from Sønderjylland , one branch of which was raised to nobility in 1710. The noble family has now died out, but the bourgeois branch still lives in Norway. Nissen is a widespread patronymic in Sønderjylland, which should not be confused with other families.

Noble family

The noble family can be traced back to Henrik Lorentzen (Schack), a hunter near Hartvig Rantzau, who was royal chartered in 1484 at the Oldemorstoft farm in Bov Sogn . His great-grandson, the Hardenvogt in Vis Herred , Nis Asmussen († 1625) was the grandfather of the war commissioner and regional judge Nicolaus Nissen (1627–1684) of Lerbæk and Rugballegård . His sons were the chancellery and war commissioner Nicolaus Nissen (1662-1717) to Lerbæk and Rugballegård and the budget Herman Lorentz Nissen (1661-1717) to Brantbjerg .

The budget Herman Lorentz Nissen was raised to the Danish nobility on November 3, 1710 . He was married to Ida Sophie Amalie Glud (1672–1703), the daughter of the bishop in the diocese of Viborg , Søren Glud (1621–1693, noble from 1679), and Ida Christine Moth, a sister of Sophie Amalie Moth . Another son was Christian Siegfried Nissen-Benzon zu Skærsø (1700–1763), a major general. They took the name Benzon (3rd line of nobility from 1679) when they inherited the ancestral seat of Skærsø from their cousin Sophie Amalia Benzon zu Skærsø in 1754. The noble family died out due to a lack of male descendants in 1763 with the death of General Nissen-Benzon.
