Niuoko

Niuoko is a reef island in the reef rim of the Nukulaelae Atoll in the island state of Tuvalu .

geography

Niuoko, together with Tumiloto and a few tiny islets, form the eastern edge of the reef of the atoll and thus also form the easternmost point of the island state. The island is very elongated and is only separated from Kalilaia and Tapulaeani in the north by a narrow channel . In the south, Fetuatasi and Fenulaiago join to the west . The island has a dense population of Pisonia grandis . The east end of the lagoon is protected as the Nukulaelae Conservation Area . A marine census took place there in 2010 .

history

In 1865 a trade captain bought a 25-year lease for Niuoko on behalf of the German company JC Godeffroy & Sohn . However, for many years there was a dispute about the legality, especially since the Germans wanted to bring slaves to the island. Ultimately, the Germans stayed until the lease expired in 1890.
