Nukulaelae (historical name Michells Islands ) is one of the eight districts of the Pacific island state of Tuvalu . It is also one of the six atolls in the country. The land area is 1.82 square kilometers , together with the lagoon , the atoll is 43 square kilometers.
Nukulaelae is in the south of Tuvalu. The atoll consists of 15 islands and has 324 inhabitants (as of 2012), who live mainly in the main town of Fangaua and another village.
Two thirds of the population were abducted from the islands by slave traders in the 19th century . From 1865 to 1890 part of the islands was leased to German settlers .
Islands
In the southeast is the large Unbroken Western Reef ( Te Akua Fakalava ). The atoll is otherwise bordered by numerous islands, which are only slightly above the water surface.
