Nanumea is the northernmost atoll of the South Pacific island state of Tuvalu . It is located around 455 kilometers northwest of the capital, Funafuti . The land area is 3.87 square kilometers , the lagoon area more than 18 square kilometers. It is Tuvalu's second largest atoll by land area. The main town is Lolua on Nanumea .
geography
The crescent-shaped atoll measures about 11.5 kilometers from north to south and a maximum of 2.4 kilometers from east to west. It is essentially made up of five islands ( motu ) and two lagoons that separate the two largest islands, Nanumea and Lakena . On Nanumea there are five villages with a total population of 556 (as of 2012).
