No Parlez is the debut album by the English singer Paul Young . It was released on July 18, 1983 on CBS and in the US on Columbia Records . It reached number one in several European countries, triple platinum in the UK and platinum status in Germany . The album consists to a large extent of cover versions; Paul Young was only involved in two songs in the songwriting process. It is named after the Anthony Moore song that is also on it .
Emergence
The album was recorded in The Workhouse studio in London from 1982 to 1983 and produced by Laurie Latham .
Publication and reception
The album peaked at number one on the UK charts for a non-consecutive 5 weeks and stayed in the UK top 100 for 119 weeks. The album was triple platinum certified by the BPI for over 900,000 copies in the UK.
The first two singles Iron Out the Rough Spots - released in advance on November 12, 1982 - and a remake of Love of the Common People were initially unsuccessful. Then Young was able to top the British single charts for three weeks in the summer of 1983 with a cover of the Marvin Gaye classic Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home) . It was the first of Young's 14 UK top 40 singles. This was followed by success in the rest of Europe. As a result, the next single Come Back and Stay reached number 4 in Great Britain and top position in several European countries, including Germany and Switzerland . The re-release of Love of the Common People then made it to number 2 in the UK in late 1983.
The album was released in North America with a changed cover. A new video for the single Come Back and Stay was also produced for the local market.
In 2008 the album was re-released with a bonus CD.
