Noel Purcell (actor)

Patrick Joseph Noel Purcell (born December 23, 1900 in Dublin , Ireland , † March 3, 1985 ibid) was an Irish actor and comedian .

Life

Noel Purcell was born on December 23, 1900 in Lower Mercer Street, Dublin, near St. Stephen's Green . At a young age he worked at Dublin's Gaiety Theater as a call boy who called the actor onto the stage shortly before their appearance. Here his love for the theater developed. However, his mother initially convinced him to take a down-to-earth job. Among other things, Purcell worked as a decorator and cabinet maker . He took one of his first roles in a play in the mid-1920s in a production of Jack the Giant-Killer .

Purcell first appeared in a feature film in 1926 when he took on the role of Garda Sergeant in the later lost silent film Blarney . Despite his first film engagements, Purcell remained loyal to the theater. Occasionally he was seen there in female roles, which was mainly used for comical effects with his height of 1.93 m.

Purcell achieved his breakthrough in the role of the sailor Paddy Button in the film The Blue Lagoon (1949). With his stately figure and his full white beard, Purcell remained predestined for seafaring roles in the years that followed. For example, he played a ship's captain in Dakapo (1951), the ship's carpenter in Moby Dick (1956), a ship mechanic in Ferry to Hong Kong (1959), a captain in Tommy, the Torero (1959), and in Is Yes Crazy - Our Torpedo comes back (1961) an admiral and in mutiny on the Bounty (1962) a mutinous sailor.

His last film role took Purcell in 1973 in the agent film The Mackintosh Man , directed by John Huston , with which Purcell had already worked in 1956 for Moby Dick , 1963 for The Dead List and 1969 for Dave Home in All Beds .

In addition to acting, Purcell was also known as a singer in his hometown. In the late 1940s, Leo Maguire composed the traditional The Dublin Saunter for him , which Purcell also sang live on various occasions. The piece of music was later recorded as a single, but despite its popularity, it did not sell particularly well.

Purcell was married to Eileen Purcell (nee Marmion) from 1941 until his death in 1985. Four sons sprang from the marriage: Michael (* 1942), Glynn (* 1943), Patrick (* 1946) and Victor (* 1953).
