Nokomai is a small settlement in the Southland District of the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 18 km south of Lake Wakatipu in the valley of the Mataura River . The closest settlements are Athol around 7.5 km west and Garston around 3.5 km north. The New Zealand State Highway 6 , which connects the settlement with Queenstown , about 52 km to the north, runs through Nokomai .
history
In the vicinity of Nokomai there was once an important open-cast gold mine, in which there was a 2 m thick gold-bearing layer at a depth of around 40 m, which enabled a yield of over one gram per ton. The opencast mine has since been abandoned and the landscape has been recultivated.
