Athol is a small town in the Southland District of the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name goes back either to Harry Athol , the operator of the first hotel in the area, or to the Scottish hometown of the early landowner WB Rogers . It is also possible to refer to Atholl in Perthshire , Scotland , from which the former superintendent of the then Southland province , James Menzies , came from.
geography
Athol is about 55 km south of Queenstown , halfway between Lumsden and Kingston, on New Zealand State Highway 6 . The closest locations on the highway are Parawa in the southwest and Nokomai in the northeast. The Mataura River flows through the village .
