Parawa is a small settlement in the Southland District of the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Composed of the Māori terms “ pa ” and “ rawa ”, the name of the settlement stands for “land on which a village was built”.
geography
The settlement is located around 23 km north-northeast of Lumsden in a small plain that is determined by the Mataura River . The surrounding mountains rise over 700 m up to 1478 m with the Mid Dome . The New Zealand State Highway 6 runs through the settlement , via which the small village of Athol , a good 4 km to the northeast, can be reached. Around 11 km to the southwest, the plain opens at Five Rivers , which extends to Mossburn and Lumsden .
