Five Rivers is a small settlement in the Southland District of the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The settlement got its name after the farm " Five River Station " founded here by Arthur Hogue in 1857 . The place is a station on the Southern Scenic Route .

geography

The settlement is located about 13 km north of Lumsden at the junction of New Zealand State Highway 97 from New Zealand State Highway 6 to Mossburn on the Irthing Stream , one of five tributaries from the Eyre Mountains into the Oreti River . The other four are the Cromel , Acton , Oswald and the Dilston Stream , which unite at Lowther about seven kilometers to the south and do not come close to the place except for the Irthing Stream . The next villages on SH 6 to the north are Parawa and Athol, about 25 km away .
