Lowther is a small settlement consisting of a few houses in the Southland District of the Southland on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The settlement is named after the 913 m high Lowther Peak , which borders the settlement to the east. The little mountain was named by surveyor John Turnbull Thomson after the owner of a nearby farm, Thomas Lowther Barnhill .
geography
The settlement is located around 9 km north of Lumsden between Lumsden in the south and Parawa in the north. The New Zealand State Highway 6 runs through the settlement and connects the southern part to the south with Invercargill , some 85 km away . State Highway 94 , which intersects State Highway 6 a few kilometers south, connects Lowther with Te Anau in the northwest and Gore in the southeast.
East of the settlement flows the Irthing Stream , which merges with the Cromel Stream and the Acton Stream to the southwest and flows further south into the Oreti River .
history
In 1725 the battle of Waitaramea between the Māori tribes Ngāti Mamoe and Ngāti Tahu took place not far from the town. A plaque commemorates this event.
