Nolan Russell Wallach (* 1940 ) is an American mathematician who studies Lie groups , representation theory, mathematical physics (including quantum computer science ) and differential geometry .

life and work

Wallach studied at the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in 1962 and at Washington University with a master's degree in 1963 and a doctorate from Jun-Ichi Hano (A classification of real simple Lie algebras). He was then an instructor and later a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1969 he became assistant professor, 1970 associate professor and 1972 professor at Rutgers University , where he became Hermann Weyl professor in 1986. In 1989 he became Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, San Diego .

He wrote a two-volume monograph on real reductive algebraic groups and their theory of representation.

In 1978 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki ( The spectrum of compact quotients of semisimple Lie groups ).

From 1972 to 1974 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2004 he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1989 he received an honorary professorship at the University of Córdoba in Argentina. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.

From 1997 to 2003 he was Associate Editor of the Annals of Mathematics and 1996 to 1998 of the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society. From 2001 he was editor of Mathematics: Theory and Applications at Birkhäuser. From 1998 to 2001 he served on the Council of the American Mathematical Society .

Alvany Rocha-Caridi is one of his PhD students .
