Nonsuch Island , formerly called Nonesuch Island , is a small island in the northeast of the west Atlantic archipelago of Bermuda . The island lies between the southwestern tip of Saint David's Island and Castle Island and forms the northeasternmost section of the Bermudian Castle Islands .

geography

The crescent-shaped island with a land area of approximately 0.05 km² is densely overgrown and protrudes a maximum of 16 meters above sea level at the highest points. It borders on the Bermudian natural bay Castle Harbor to the west and the open sea of the western Atlantic to the east.

history

The island was (presumably) discovered by the English during the first settlement of Bermuda (1612) . It was not until 1865 that a quarantine station for those suffering from yellow fever was set up here . The quarantine station is no longer in operation today.

Flora and fauna

On Nonsuch Island, which has been a nature reserve for several years , there are among other things breeding colonies of the (rare) Bermuda petrels ( Cahow ), the national bird of Bermuda.
