Saint David's Island was originally a rugged island barely 2 km² in size, as can be clearly seen on old maps from the time Bermuda was first settled in the 17th century. After 1940 - for military use as an aircraft base - it was enlarged in several construction phases and its appearance was completely changed. For this purpose, permanent land connections were established to the north-west of Longbird Island and to the south-east of Cooper Island . In addition, a narrow artificial peninsula was created for another airfield on the south coast , which protrudes about 1,100 meters into Castle Harbor . Today the land area of the ( artificial island ) Saint David's is therefore just over 2.6 km². Smaller towns ( Melrose , Cashew City ) are located on the (hardly structurally modified) north and northeast coast of the island.

Around half of the island's area is currently occupied by the airfields and the former military buildings in the south. After the military bases were given up in 1995, the runways now belong to LF Wade International Airport (until 2007: Bermuda International Airport ).

Saint David's is connected to Bermuda's main island, Grand Bermuda , by a 1000 meter long roadway ( The Causeway ). A small bridge leads to the neighboring island of Saint George’s to the north .
