The Noorderlicht (until 1924 under the name Kalkgrund , until 1992 Flensburg ) is a two-masted schooner . From 1910 to 1963 she was a lightship in the Geltinger Bay . In 1963 it was replaced by the Kalkgrund lighthouse .

Lightship Kalkgrund
The lightship Kalkgrund was built in 1910 for 184,000 gold marks as a three-masted schooner by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft . She was towed to the position of a sand bank called Kalkgrund in the Geltinger Bay and replaced an older lightship from 1876, the Kalk Grund .
After 1919 the Kalkgrund was in service with the German Reichsmarine .
Lightship Flensburg
The lightship was given the name Flensburg in 1925 by the water engineering authority in Kiel and at the same time it was moved a little closer to the German-Danish border. During the Second World War , the middle mast was removed and replaced with a deck structure. In 1953/54 a major renovation was carried out by the State Shipyard Rendsburg-Saatsee. Among other things, the ship was extended from 30 meters to 36 meters. The Flensburg had a crew of 15 men who were responsible for maintaining the ship and carrying out the pilotage services. The beacons (two each) were attached to the masts.
On June 12, 1963 the end came for the Flensburg , it was decommissioned and replaced by a lighthouse, about one nautical mile south of the old position. Then a coal trading company used Flensburg as mobile accommodation for Greek guest workers.
After 1968 the Flensburg served the Möltenort sailing club as a club and during the Olympic sailing competitions in Kiel in 1972 it was a maritime attraction for domestic and foreign guests. At the beginning of May 1986 an interested party from the Netherlands made an offer to acquire the Flensburg for 85,000 DM and the ship left the port of Möltenort. Some of Flensburg's equipment can be viewed in the old Travemünde lighthouse .
Noorderlicht
In 1992 Ted van Broekhuysen and Geerd Ritzema bought the former "Flensburg" for 180,000 guilders and converted it into a two-masted schooner. There are ten double cabins on board for the crew and passengers. In the summer months they sailed the waters around Spitsbergen and in winter the Noorderlicht was frozen in the Tempelfjord and served as a ship in the ice, only accessible from Longyearbyen by dog or snowmobile.In 2017 the Noorderlicht was transferred to the current owners Marielle van Twillert and Floris de Waard sold. In winter she sails in northern Norway in the Tromso area and in summer in Svalbard.
