Norşuntepe (actually Norşuntepe Höyüğü ) is a tell in Turkey , about 25 km east of Elazığ . Today it is located in the area of the Keban Dam , so that only one island remains in the reservoir. The crown of the hill had an area of around 500 m by 300 m, within which traces of settlement could be identified.

Norşuntepe was excavated from 1968 by the German Archaeological Institute under the direction of the Heidelberg professor for prehistory and early history Harald Hauptmann . In 1974 the work had to be stopped because of the rising water level due to the construction of the Keban dam . During the excavations, 40 layers of settlement were identified, ranging from the late Chalcolithic period through all phases of the Bronze Age to a Urartean settlement in the late Iron Age . Several richly furnished graves also date from the Iron Age. The Urartian settlement was destroyed by fire and abandoned.
