Norbert Langer (born April 21, 1899 in Nikolsburg ; † May 12, 1975 in Vienna ) was an Austrian literary historian and writer.

Life

Norbert Langer was born on April 21, 1889 in the Austro-Hungarian Nikolsburg in the margraviate of Moravia . He studied at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there in 1923 with the dissertation The Problem of Romanticism in Nietzsche . Starting from an analysis of Friedrich Nietzsche's individuality and character, Langer tries to interpret his relationship to Romanticism and sees Nietzsche himself as both the romantic and the skeptic. Earlier research saw romanticism too one-sidedly rooted in the irrational and Nietzsche's “essence” was most broadly outlined in the “romantic synthesis”. Langer assigns Nietzsche to romanticism, particularly when it comes to the “musical attitude to life”.

During the time of National Socialism , Langer was editor-in-chief of the magazine Der Volksdeutsche, published by the Volksbund für das Deutschtum Abroad (today: Association for German Cultural Relations Abroad ) . He also wrote a literary history based on Nazi cultural policy with the title The German Poetry since the World War .

Norbert Langer is the author of the book series Dichter aus Österreich , which was published by Österreichischer Bundesverlag in the mid-1950s to mid-1960s , and also introduces authors who are otherwise not mentioned. In his “Suggestion for Reading” the works of Franz Tumler , Langer u. a. the story The First Day , which in 1946 was on the Federal Ministry of Education's "list of blocked authors and books".

Norbert Langer was married to the Dutch-Austrian pianist Hilde Langer-Rühl .
