Norbert Petri (born February 24, 1912 in Sibiu , Austria-Hungary , † February 28, 1978 in Brașov ) was a Romanian musicologist and composer .

Life

Norbert Petri came from the German-speaking minority of the Transylvanian Saxons and attended schools in Alba Iulia , Sighișoara and Bucharest , whereupon he first studied philology in Bucharest and Vienna . In 1937 he began studying music in Bucharest. From 1942 to 1944 he was second conductor of the Philharmonic Society in Brașov , temporarily also organist, and also worked at the "Kronstadt German Liederkranz". During this time he composed his first musical plays "Little Red Riding Hood", "It must be a farmer" and "Transylvanian peasant wedding".

From 1944 to December 1949 he was affected by the deportation of Romanian Germans to the Soviet Union . He drew his compositions in the prison camp with the name "Norwil" (his full name was NORbert WILhelm Petri).

From 1950 Petri taught various instruments, including the accordion, at the Kronstadt Volkskunstschule. He was one of the founding members of the Kronstadt Music Theater, where he worked as a conductor from 1954. Numerous operettas, singing games, musicals, ballets and operas with titles such as "Ultima oră", "Cei trei mușchetari", "Idolul sfărâmat", "Trandafirii Doftanei", "Ion cel tare", "Rodica" and others were created here. For most of these works there is also a German text version, which has remained unused. Petris also wrote works with exclusively German text such as “Therese Krones”, “Lisa cleans up” and others. Petri continued to create symphonic works, chamber music, instrumental music, songs, patriotic cantatas up to mass songs and brass music.

Petri published his research results on the history of dance and arranged works by other composers such as works by Johann Strauss. He wrote new texts for the secular cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach . Petri was instrumental in founding an amateur orchestra and the Paul Richter Choir. He was a member of the Handel Society, secretary of the Kronstadt composers' association, jury member at numerous choir competitions "Cântarea României", folklore collector and editor of several collections of choir songs.

On July 3, 1968, Petri took part in the “Consultation at the Central Committee (ZK) of the Romanian Communist Party (RKP) with scientists and cultural workers from the ranks of German nationality”, which resulted in the Council of Working People of German Nationality .

In 1999 Petri was made an honorary citizen of Brașov. His estate is in the city library there. He had two children with his wife Rosa.
