Norbert Pfennig

Norbert Pfennig (born July 8, 1925 in Kassel ; † February 11, 2008 in Überlingen ) was a German microbiologist .

Life

Norbert Pfennig was the son of Gertrud, nee Schunk, and Hermann Pfennig. He was married to Helga Bantelmann and had five children.

Norbert Pfennig studied biology and in 1952 at the Georg-August University of Göttingen to work investigations on actinomycin-forming rays fungal strains and their actinomycins doctorate .

In 1967 he was offered a professorship at the Georg-August University of Göttingen, and from 1981 until his retirement he was professor for microbial ecology at the University of Konstanz .

Act

Pfennig's research focus was on microbial ecology. He was a member of several scientific societies such as an associated member of the Institute for Microbiology and Genetics of the University of Göttingen, member of the Society for Radiation and Environmental Research (GSF), member of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM) , the British Society for General Microbiology ( SGM) , the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and emeritus member of Bergey's Manual Trust . In 1980 he was the first winner of the main prize of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM). He had an honorary doctorate.

In 1999 Brian Tindall established a genus of his own for Amoebobacter purpureus Eichler & Pfennig 1989 (today Lamprocystis purpurea ) from the Chromatiaceae family , which he named Pfennig in honor of Pfennigia .

His botanical author's abbreviation is " Pfennig ".
