Oleg Georgievich Korotajew (* 1949 - January 12, 1994 in New York ) was a Soviet boxer . He was runner- up in 1974 in the light heavyweight division.

Career

Oleg Karataiev began as a teenager in Moscow with the boxes . He belonged to "Burewestnik (Petrel)" Moscow and was trained by G. Dscherojon at the beginning of his career. He was a physically very strong boxer who lived on his punching power.

In 1970 he first took part in the Soviet championships and immediately won the light heavyweight title. In the final, he defeated it Wladimir Nesterenko on points. At the Soviet championship in 1971 Oleg Korotajew suffered a severe setback in his career, because he lost in the round of 16 against Nikolai Anfimov by technical knockout in the second round. In the autumn of 1971, however, he defeated the 1971 Soviet light heavyweight champion Vladimir Metelev in a tournament in Minsk by breaking off in the 1st round and had thus proven that he was one of the best, if not the best Soviet light heavyweight of those years. In the same year he was also used in the international battles against the United States in Las Vegas and Louisville , where he defeated the American starters Nathanile Jackson and William Ratcliffe prematurely.

In 1972 he lost again to Nikolai Anfinov at the Soviet championship, but this time only in the final. With this defeat, however, he had blocked the way to the Olympic Games in Munich . Anfinow started there, but he did not win a medal.

In 1973 Oleg Korotajew was used at the European Championships in Belgrade in the light heavyweight division. He defeated Ottomar Sachse from Halle in the quarter-finals there with 4-1 referee votes on points, but lost in the semifinals against the Yugoslav Mate Parlov, who was then dominating boxing in the light heavyweight division worldwide, by technical knockout in the 2nd round. By reaching the semi-finals, however, he had already won an EM bronze medal .

At the Soviet championship that took place after the European championship in Belgrade, Oleg Korotajew won his second Soviet championship title by winning points over Gennady Ochulin.

In 1974 Oleg Korotajew suffered another knockout loss in the Soviet championship. His conqueror was Valery Sokolov. But he was still used in the 1st World Championship of amateur boxers in Havana in the light heavyweight division. In Havana he won in a preliminary round match against Ted Nelson role from the Bahamas by techn. KO in the 3rd round, defeated Ernesto Sanchez from Venezuela on points in the round of 16 , won the quarterfinals over Pentti Kaijanlaakso from Finland and was technical knockout winner in the third round over the American Leon Spinks in the semifinals . In the final he met Mate Parlov again, who defeated him again. Oleg Korotajew had to be taken out of the ring unable to defend against Parlov in the first round. He was thus vice world champion .

1975 Oleg Korotajew was the third time Soviet light heavyweight champion, this time he managed a point victory over Nikolai Anfinow in the final. Despite this victory, he was not used at the European Championships in 1975. Towards the end of 1975, the USSR boxed with Oleg Korotajew as a light heavyweight three times in the United States. He lost it in the first fight in Las Vegas against the future professional Michael Dokes on points and was defeated on points at the second start in the revenge by Leon Spinks. Only in the third USA fight he managed to win over Marvin Stinson.

In 1976 Oleg Korotajew started for the last time in a Soviet championship. He lost it in the semifinals against Dawit Kwatschadze and had to make do with 3rd place. A start at the Olympic Games in Montreal was a long way off for him.

Oleg Korotajew ended his boxer career in 1977. He became a coach and, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, even became Vice President of the Russian Boxing Federation. In the fall of 1994 he was in New York for business reasons and was found shot dead in his hotel on January 12, 1994. The background to this murder could never be clarified.
