Norbert Rubin "Nordie" Morgenstern (born May 25, 1935 in Toronto ) is a Canadian civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Life

Morgenstern studied at the University of Toronto , where he made his bachelor's degree in 1956, and then at Imperial College in London , where he received his doctorate with Alec Skempton and taught as a lecturer from 1960. In 1968 he became professor of civil engineering at the University of Alberta .

Morgenstern dealt, among other things, with slope stability, working together with Alan W. Bishop , and landslides, with dams (he was involved in over 140 dam projects worldwide), special geotechnical problems in Canada ( permafrost , oil sands , mining residues and mines, pipelines) and in the offshore sector.

He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering since 1975. He received the Alberta Order of Excellence in 1991 . From 1989 to 1994 he was President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering . In 1981 he was a Rankine Lecturer and in 1992 Terzaghi Lecturer . In 1971 he received the Walter Huber Research Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers and in 1979 the Legget Award, the highest honor of the Canadian Geotechnical Society.

Among other things, he investigated the 2014 Mount Polley Dam breach .
