Norbert Werner

Norbert Werner (born February 11, 1937 in Offenbach am Main ; † August 17, 2019 in Gießen ) was a German art historian .

Live and act

Werner was born the son of Karl and Juliane Werner (née Huth). After studying art history, history and archeology, he was in 1965 at the Art Science Institute of the Justus-Liebig University in Giessen Dr. phil. PhD. From 1966 to 1972 he was a research assistant and academic adviser there . In 1972 he was appointed professor of art history in Giessen. In 1974/75, 1986/87 and 1998/99 Werner was dean in the humanities department, and in 2002 he retired.

Werner's main interests were German art from the 13th to 15th centuries, the Italian Renaissance and painting of the 19th and 20th centuries, on which he published numerous articles. He was the editor of Giessen's contributions to art history and collaborator on the Biographical-Bibliographical Church Lexicon and the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi .
