Nordö-Link

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nordö-Link is a Swedish shipping company that offers ferry services between Malmö in Sweden and Travemünde in Germany. Nordö-Link has been part of the Finnish Finnlines group since 2002 , but will continue to operate as an independent brand under the Finnlines umbrella.

history

The Malmö Link , former freight ferry of Nordö-Link, in 2007

The company was founded in 1982 as Rederi AB Nordö in Malmö. After the TT-Saga-Line, a cooperation between TT-Line and the then Saga Linjen , had discontinued an existing ferry connection between Malmö and Travemünde shortly before , Nordö resumed traffic on that route. The first trip on the connection, initially designed as a pure freight line, took place on October 7, 1982 with the ship Svealand av Malmö . In May 1984, the Scandinavia was added a second ship on this route, and Helsingborg, north of Malmö, was also added as a destination port. Insofar as the capacity of the ferries allowed it, a start was also made to transport passengers, cars and mainly mobile homes. In February 1986 the majority of Rederi AB Nordö was taken over by Sea Link Shipping AB of the Norwegian entrepreneur Elling Ellingsen and changed its name to Rederi AB Nordö Link . In April 1987, the company's two ferries were converted for the transport of rail freight wagons, so that from then on, in addition to trucks and trailers, entire rail freight trains could be shipped between Germany and Sweden. In the course of the renovation, the ships were given new names: Svea Link and Scandinavia Link . On January 10, 1989, a third ship was added with the Skåne Link , and in April 1990 a fourth for a short time with the Hansa Link . Since the traffic in the freight area between Travemünde and Malmö was developing well, the parent company Sea Link Shipping AB had bigger plans. A new company wanted to enter the passenger business on this route with luxury jumbo ferries. For this purpose the company Euroway was founded. However, the passenger business fell far short of expectations and forced Sea Link Shipping AB to part with Nordö Link AB in 1992 due to financial difficulties . The Rederi AB Nordö link has now been an independent company. However, it was later taken over by the Dutch company MGA Ventures BV .

The Nordlink , 2007 in the port of Malmö

In April 2001, then announced Scandlines , Nordö link from MGA Ventures BV to want to buy, because they wanted to expand its own position in the Baltic region with the attractive combination of Travemuende to Malmo at Scandlines. In the further course of the year, however, these plans were revised as it became clear after discussions with the antitrust authorities that such a takeover would only be approved subject to far-reaching conditions.

On 27 May 2002 then the Finnish took Finnlines Oyj , the Rederi AB Nordö link led but continued as an independent subsidiary and brand within the Finnlines Group. In 2004, Nordö-Link transported 220,000 units of freight on the Travemünde-Malmö route, which corresponded to a market share of 49% in the Travemünde-southern Sweden route.

Ships

Nordö-Link is currently (as of May 2018) using three ships on the Travemünde-Malmö route:

The ships have the label of the parent company Finnlines on their hulls , but with the addition Nordö-Link on the superstructure. With the exception of Monday (two), there are three daily departures from both Travemünde and Malmö, and the crossing takes around nine hours each. Each of the three ships has a capacity of around 160 freight units (complete trucks or unaccompanied trailers ). The main business of Nordö-Link is still freight traffic, but passengers, cars and mobile homes are also transported.
