Euroway was a Swedish shipping company that was active from 1992 to 1994. The company was founded by the Norwegian businessman Elling Ellingsen and his company Sea Link Shipping AB with the aim of establishing a cruise ferry connection between Malmö in Sweden and Lübeck in Germany . Euroway's business model was to offer a cruise-like experience, comparable to the connections already established in the northern Baltic Sea on the routes between Stockholm and Turku and Helsinki by Viking Line and Silja Line .

Beginnings

The first plans for the foundation were made in 1989 and were presented to the public as the Hansa project on June 21, 1989. According to the original plan, it was planned that Euroway should start operating in mid-1991, but the delivery of the first of two ordered ferries was already delayed. The completion of the first ship M / S Frans Suell at the shipyard Brodogradilište Split in Croatia Split was delayed due to the Yugoslav wars by several months, the delivery of the vessel took place only in May 1992nd

The start of Euroway also turned out to be difficult because, due to insufficient marketing, it was also unclear for a long time when the connection between Malmö and Lübeck could be established. On May 19, 1992, the Frans Suell operated the route from Malmö for the first time only to Travemünde . on September 1st the route was extended to Lübeck. It took the ship around 15 hours to complete a one-way trip. However, all vehicles on board had to leave the ship in Travemünde because the city of Lübeck wanted to keep the expected additional traffic out of the city center. At the newly built Euroway terminal at Lübeck's inner city port Konstinkai, only passengers were handled. In the beginning, trucks were generally not transported, as Euroway's target group was primarily cruise and conference guests . In addition, a cargo route for trucks between Malmö and Travemünde by that time also existed for Sea Link Shipping AB belonging Nordö Link .

A second ship, identical to the Frans Suell , had already been ordered. This was to be called M / S Frans Kockum , but due to the delay on the part of the shipyard and poor profitability of the new connection, Euroway canceled this order and did not accept the ship. The shipyard nevertheless completed the ship, which was already under construction, and finally sold it to the shipping company DFDS , which put it into operation in 1994 under the name M / S Crown of Scandinavia . Since Euroway but still needed a second ship in order to achieve a pairing of traffic, so one daily departure both from Malmo as well as to offer from Lübeck, discussions have now been with Rederi AB Slite a charter with respect M / S Olympia out which, however, remained without result.

Economic difficulties and end

Due to management problems and the poor economic situation in Europe, Sea Link Shipping AB had to sell Nordö Link in 1992, but decided to continue operating Euroway. However, they were looking for a necessary partner. In 1993 the Finnish Silja Line was added and the company changed its name to Silja Line Euroway . With the arrival of Silja Line, the M / S Silja Festival was used as the second ship . In September 1993 the route was extended to the Danish city of Copenhagen , and from then on, trucks were also permitted for transport.

However, since the number of passengers required for economic operation was not achieved and there were also financial difficulties on the part of Silja Line, Silja Line Euroway had to cease operations on March 12, 1994 .
