history

Beginnings

Starfish was founded in spring 1991 by Gabi Fischer, Tom Etter, Werner Fischer and Christian Pauli as a street music project. In the following two years, the group initially toured Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Denmark and Poland under the name Starfish & The Raiders of the Lost Shark . Their program consisted primarily of Anglo-American pop songs from the entire 20th century. The semi-acoustic, minimal line-up with vocals, guitar, double bass and standing drums has been the focal point of the company right from the start. In 1992, a first vinyl single with cover versions ( Shine / I Feel Fine ) and a first original composition ( It Gets Me Down ) was recorded in the Startrack Studio Schaffhausen.

Years 1993–1995

Since the beginning of 1993 the writer and lyricist Jan Krohn began to write song lyric for the band . The fruits of this collaboration were recorded for the first time in the spring of 1994, again in the Startrack Studio, and published in January 1994 on the CD In Love , which was widely acclaimed and praised by the Swiss music press . "Starfish land a hit thanks to tasty pop," headlined the Berner Zeitung . The weekly newspaper WoZ summarized: "With In Love , Starfish created a great record." The song Rain Comes Falling Down developed into the actual airplay hit of the Swiss public radio DRS3 . A live broadcast of a concert by DRS3 'Uf dr Gass' as well as contributions to various radio and television stations soon followed. From February to September 1994 the band embarked on a CD release tour of around forty concerts.

Years 1995-1997

After the extensive In Love tour, Christian Pauli left the band in autumn 1995 for family reasons. He was replaced by the bassist Hans Ermel, who also came from the Bernese jazz scene . In April 1996 the band withdrew to the remote Glarner Klöntal and there, with the help of the sound engineer Patrik Schwitter, recorded the songs for the CD Slamming the Door, which were mostly composed again with Jan Krohn, on analog tape. In August 1996 they also recorded the opening track of the children's song sampler Ohrewürm 2 in the Startrack Studio Miini Fründin . In February 1997 the CD release tour for Slamming The Door began . The title Three Young Ladies once again enjoyed extensive airplay from Swiss radio stations, and the Swiss music press was once again full of praise. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung found: "Without a doubt one of the most beautiful Swiss pop albums in a long time." The weekly WoZ doubles after: "Warm and friendly, sometimes melancholy sounds against the rush. Indeed, whoever manages songs like Man In The Horn or Guess My Sign deserves the appointment of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres ."

After further extensive tours, the band took an artistic break in the autumn of 1997, which continues to this day. Founding member Tom Etter joined the important Swiss band Züri West , Werner Tian Fischer became an alumnus of the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. Jan Krohn, brother of the bestselling writer Tim Krohn , continues to write texts for various Swiss musicians and bands as a freelancer.
