Planned course of the NORDAL pipeline

The North German connection line , often referred to as the NORDAL pipeline , was planned as a pipeline to transport natural gas from Lubmin near Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Bernau near Berlin ( Börnicke district ) in Brandenburg and approved in 2004. Construction never started. Since the parallel OPAL pipeline went into operation in 2011 , the project has disappeared from public discussion. The project developer's information website has now been taken offline.

According to the previous plans, the gas pipeline would be around 210 kilometers long, including around 104 kilometers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and around 106 kilometers in Brandenburg, and is to be designed for the transport of around 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

The construction of the NORDAL pipeline has been approved in both of the federal states concerned after completion of the relevant planning approval procedures ; since 2006, the permit has also been valid for an expansion of the planned diameter to 1.20 meters (DN 1200) compared to the previously targeted 0.80 meters. The construction of the pipeline, which is planned at a depth of one meter, would thus be possible at any time, and should be carried out in the open construction method as well as under roads , railway lines , bodies of water and ecologically sensitive biotopes using horizontal drilling technology.

The project developer for NORDAL was Concord Power Nordal GmbH, a company of the Lichtblick Group . In 2009 the company sued the Federal Network Agency against the exemption from regulation of the OPAL pipeline, which partly ran parallel to one another ; the lawsuit was dismissed in 2010.
