At the FIS races of 1929 in Zakopane, Poland, which were later declared the 6th Nordic World Ski Championships by the International Ski Federation , a cross-country skiing competition for women was held as a demonstration competition for the first time at a major event.
At that time, the FIS races in Zakopane were predominantly referred to as (unofficial) European skiing championships , accordingly the winner Bronisława Staszel-Polankowa was celebrated as European champion by the Sokół Zakopane ski club and is now considered the first, albeit unofficial, world champion.
The steadily increasing number of cross-country skiing competitions for women, especially in Scandinavia and Central Europe, in the late 1920s and especially the 1930s, prompted the FIS to think increasingly about including women’s competitions at world championships. The Zakopane competition has not yet brought a breakthrough in this regard. The first official women’s competition at a major event did not take place until the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo - which also counts as world championships - due to the interrupted development during the Second World War .
