The Nordkalottleden in Finland

Nordkalottleden ( Swedish ; Norwegian Nordkalottruta ; Finnish Kalottireitti ) is a hiking trail through the far north of Scandinavia . It runs through Finland (70 kilometers), Sweden (350 kilometers) and Norway (380 kilometers).

The Nordkalottleden is a total of 800 kilometers long and crosses international borders 15 times. The route begins in the north in Kautokeino (Norway), leads over the Treriksröset , the triangle between Finland, Norway and Sweden, and ends in the south in Sulitjelma (Norway) or Kvikkjokk (Sweden).

In 1977 work began on planning a hiking trail in the north. Some of the existing routes were included and new routes were added. Parts of the Padjelantaleden and Kungsleden , the Norwegian Nordlandsruta and the old Troms border path were included . These plans were completed in 1989 and in 1993 the Nordkalottleden was opened at the Treriksröset triangle .

The trail touches Øvre Dividal National Park , Reisa National Park , Abisko National Park and Padjelanta National Park, as well as the Sulitjelmafjell and Narvikfjell regions . In the newly created sections, the path is not yet clearly recognizable and is thinly signposted. Nordkalottleden is marked with piles of stones and signs, but as these are sparsely distributed, a good map is essential. The path is also often flooded, especially at the beginning of summer, which necessitates detours from the original route. In some places rivers have to be crossed because bridges are partly missing. In most of the sections there are shelters and overnight accommodations at a distance of 10 to 20 kilometers. The huts are mostly equipped with cooking facilities, beds and firewood. A flat rate is usually charged for overnight stays in the huts. It is expected that all hikers observe the right of everyone and generally treat the environment and nature carefully.
