Norma Fox Mazer

Norma Fox Mazer (born May 15, 1931 in New York City , † October 17, 2009 in Montpelier , Vermont ) was an American children's and youth author.

Life

Norma Fox grew up with two sisters in Glens Falls, New York State . She studied at Antioch College in Yellow Springs , Ohio and at Syracuse University . In 1950 she married Harry Mazer .

After Norma Fox Mazer and her husband had made a living for many years writing stories for magazines and magazines, their first youth book Ich, Trissy came out in 1970 . Her next novel, A figure of speech , the German edition of which is entitled If someone calls, tell him I am dead , received a 1974 National Book Award nomination in the Children's Books category. In 1978, Norma Fox became Mazer for the short story book Dear Bill, do you remember? the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award . She received the 1982 Edgar Allan Poe Award in the Best Juvenile category for Taking Terri Mueller , which came out as a phone call after eight years in German translation .

Norma Fox Mazer wrote more than thirty books that have received multiple awards. Her works for young adolescents often deal with family separation, the loss and death of loved ones. In 1984, When We First Met was filmed for television by HBO . Together with her husband Harry she wrote The Solid Gold Kid (1977) and Last Mission (1988), as well as Heartbeat (1989) and Bright Days, Stupid Nights (1992), both of which have also been published in German.

The Mazers lived for many years in Jamesville , New York, and later in Montpelier, Vermont, where Norma Fox Mazer taught at Vermont College from 1997 to 2006 . The marriage had four children; Daughter Anne Mazer is also a writer.
