Norman Hetherington
Norman Frederick Hetherington (born May 29, 1921 in Lilyfield , New South Wales , † December 6, 2010 in Greenwich , New South Wales) was an Australian cartoonist and puppeteer .
Hetherington was best known for the popular character of Mr. Squiggle , who ran on Australian children's television since 1959 . He worked for the Australian magazine The Bulletin for over seven decades .
Live and act
Hetherington wrote his first cartoon for The Bulletin while still high school . In the 1930s he studied art at East Sydney Technical College . After his military service in World War II , he then worked entirely for the magazine and worked there with other artists such as Norman Lindsay . In the 1950s, he began with the performances of puppet theaters in libraries and children's performances in various cinemas in Sydney . In 1959 he then developed the character of Mr. Squiggle , which he both played and spoke as a doll. His wife Margaret wrote the scripts , while his daughter Rebecca served as Mr. Squiggles' assistant. The Mosman Art Gallery in Sydney honored Hetherington with an exhibition in 2005. He died in 2010 at the age of 89.
