Norman J. Warren

Norman J. Warren (born June 25, 1942 ) is an English film director , film editor and cameraman mainly from the field of horror films, who together with Pete Walker represented the new wave of British film of the 1970s.

Life

Warren was an avid movie fan as a child. He worked as an assistant in the two Peter Sellers films Die Millionärin (1960) and Der große Knüllerin (1962) and thus entered the film industry. In 1965 he directed his second short film, Fragment , which was seen by the owner of a sex cinema. He wanted to produce films himself and then commissioned Warren to direct two full-length feature films: Her Private Hell (1968) and Love Feeling (1969). Both were successes, but Warren was barely involved in the sales.

Warren therefore did not want to be branded as a director of sex films and therefore turned down another offer in this genre ( Love is a Splendid Illusion , 1970). In order to direct his horror film Satan's Slave , he had to raise money. The last two films, Bloody New Year and Gunpowder (both from 1987), were severely hampered by producer Maxine Julius' low budget.

Although Warren did not release any feature films between 1987 and 2016, he continued to work in the industry as a director, e.g. B. for music videos, educational short films and a BBC film for students. That his horror films still had a large fan base becomes clear when the documentary Evil Heritage , which was directed by Darren J. Perry and follows Warren's work, is made. His cinematic work was first honored with an extensive DVD box (2004).

Norman J. Warren is a regular guest at the Manchester Festival of Fantastic Films.

In 2016, Warren announced in an interview that he would be in the post-production of a new feature film set in London's Chinatown. The completion of this film, titled Susu , was confirmed at the Birmingham FearFest in 2017, where Warren was the guest of honor. Susu was staged by Yixi Sun, Warren is on board as a detailed producer. In 2018, Susu premiered at the San Diego International Film Festival.
