Norman Rupert Barrett

Norman Rupert Barrett (born May 16, 1903 in Adelaide , † January 8, 1979 in London ) was an Australian - British surgeon . According to him, among other things, were Barret ulcer (Barrett's syndrome) or Barrett's metaplasia and Barrett's esophagus named.

Life

Barrett was born in Australia but moved to the United Kingdom when he was ten , where he studied and worked all his life. He received his education at Eton College and at Trinity College of Cambridge University . In 1928 he graduated from St Thomas' Hospital (London).

On March 7, 1947 he was the first to successfully operate a spontaneous esophageal rupture ( Boerhaave syndrome ). Barrett described the reflux-induced transformation of the squamous epithelium of the distal esophagus into a cylinder epithelium , which is known as Barrett's esophagus , is often associated with a diaphragmatic hernia and leads to adenocarcinoma in up to 14% .

In 1962 he became President of the Chest Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. From 1946 to 1971 he was editor of the journal Thorax .

Barrett also worked as a medical historian.
