National Wild and Scenic River |
The North Fork Eel River is a right tributary of the Eel River in the northwest of the US state California . The 53 km long river drains an area of 729 km².
The North Fork Eel River arises at the confluence of the West Fork North Fork Eel River and East Fork North Fork Eel River 4 miles northeast of Zenia in Trinity County . It flows in a predominantly southerly direction through the California Coast Mountains . The North Fork Eel River eventually joins the Eel River 9.6 km north of Spyrock in Mendocino County .
The catchment area of the North Eel River is very sparsely populated. The terrain includes wooded areas, oak forests and oak savannahs, and open pastureland. About 41% of the catchment area is within the Six Rivers National Forest .
On January 19, 1981, a total of 640 km in the river system of the Eel River was designated as a National Wild and Scenic River . The section of the North Fork Eel River from its mouth to the Old Gilman Ranch was placed under protection.
On the lower 8 kilometers below Split Rock we find the king salmon ( chinook ) in North Fork Eel River. Steelhead trout are common in the river.
