The river estuary is about 60 km south of the settlement of Nain . At river kilometer 130.4 there is a 9.2 m high waterfall that prevents fish from migrating into the upstream river system. The catchment area of the Notakwanon River covers 4999 km². It extends in the west to the provincial border with Québec . In the north it borders on that of the Kogaluk River , in the south on that of the Adlatok River . The vegetation in the catchment area consists mainly of lichens and low bushes. The highest point in the catchment area has a height of 610  m .
