The port of emergency Darßer Ort is a port on the southwestern Baltic Sea at Darßer Ort in the north of the Darß peninsula in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern .

It was built in 1962 (soon after the Wall was built ) by the National People's Army for the People's Navy of the GDR as a maneuvering port. The 6th technical observation company of the 6th Coastal Border Brigade was also stationed here. The entire Darßer Ort was declared a restricted area and was not allowed to be entered. The port established at that time is located within the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park , which was founded in 1990 , according to which its use was only permitted as an emergency port .

The efforts to develop the port into a modern leisure port after the unification of the two German states in 1990 became obsolete when the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park was established in the same year . It was only declared a temporary emergency port , as there is no other port between Warnemünde and Barhöft that pleasure craft can call at when the weather changes or in emergencies at sea. The following facility as a base of the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS), which stationed the rescue cruiser "Theo Fischer" there from 2003 , was initially reversed in 2008 at the request of environmentalists. This led to protests from both sea rescuers and water sports associations, as the lifeboat travel times had increased in various emergencies at sea. Finally, the DGzRS was allowed to use the port of emergency again.

However, the constant silting up of the port approach means that the fairway has to be dredged again and again, which cost around 2.4 million euros from 2009 to 2015 alone. In anticipation of a new port to be built in nearby Prerow , which would soon make the Darßer Ort emergency port superfluous, these costs were raised again and again, albeit with a delay. Between 2011 and 2019, the fairway and the port were closed several times. At times the rescue cruiser was stationed in Barhöft or used a permanent berth outside the port.

Replacement port

Contrary to the ideas of the state government and the tourism associations, the Prerow community representatives initially voted against a new port in their town in September 2010.

In the meantime, however, the municipality of Prerow and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have agreed on the construction of a state-financed port at the Prerow pier. The aim of this replacement port is expressly not the establishment of a regular sports boat port. In addition to the previous functions of the port of Darßer Ort (emergency port in bad weather and station for the rescue cruiser), only permanent berths for local fishermen are planned. The start of construction work was expected in 2019.
