Notobasis syriaca is the only plant species from the genus Notobasis in the Asteraceae family.

features

Notobasis syriaca is an annual stem therophyte that reaches heights of 60 to 150 centimeters. The leaves are white-veined on top and almost bare. Their underside is hairy little gray webbing. The stem leaves are sitting with broad heads. The uppermost stem leaves surround the heads and are almost reduced to stiff, strong thorns. The heads are axillary. The bracts are hairy, briefly thorny and cobweby. The tubular flowers are purple. The fruits are brown, glabrous and 5 to 6 millimeters long. The pappus is feathery and 13 to 15 millimeters in size.

The flowering period extends from April to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

Notobasis syriaca occurs in the Mediterranean area. In Crete, the species grows in fields, fallow land and dry ruderal sites at altitudes from 0 to 1050 meters.
