background

At the end of 1943, F. Herbert Hillringhaus and Friedrich Wenzel founded a bookstore in Freiburg im Breisgau that sold astrological and anthroposophical literature . After the Freiburg Gestapo confiscated a large part of the astrological literature on June 9, 1944 and interrogated the founders, the two founders renamed the company " Novalis " Verlag. After Freiburg was occupied by the French , Novalis Verlag was able to continue its work and mainly printed, with the consent of Marie Steiner , the philosophical writings of Rudolf Steiner and his educational lectures. After all of Rudolf Steiner's writings had been printed, the publishing house no longer had any task. It was sold to the Walter Verlag in Olten .

In 1972 F. Herbert Hillringhaus, one of the two original founders, as well as Carl Oechslin and Max U. Rapold founded Pestalozzi-Verlag in Schaffhausen , which one year later, after Max U. Rapold had acquired the name from Walter Verlag, became “Novalis Verlag “Was renamed. The publishing house, newly founded in Switzerland, was primarily intended to publish educational writings and humanities literature. In 1973 the German-Swiss philosopher Jean Gebser decreed that his entire work should appear in the publishing house, which was done posthumously in several editions. In 1997, the director of Novalis Verlag Peter Gmünder founded his own Oratio Verlag, which took over the majority of the anthroposophical titles from Novalis Verlag. His successor Michael Frensch built up the Novalis Verlag since 1998. Among other things, the publishing house devoted itself to literature that dealt with the constitution of Switzerland. At the turn of the millennium, the publisher issued twelve editions and series. Novalis magazine had to be discontinued in 2004. In 2013 the administrator of the estate of the philosopher Gebsers granted the printing rights to his works to Chronos Verlag in Zurich . At the beginning of 2010, Novalis Verlag, which until then had operated as a Swiss AG, moved to Quern-Neukirchen on the Flensburg Fjord and was converted into a GbR under German law. Today the publishing house is represented by Michael Frensch and Eva Frensch.
