Novellist (born March 10, 2009 ) is an English thoroughbred horse . The bay stallion was bred by Monsun from the Night Lagoon at the Union Stud in Eitorf . With his victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes , Novellist ensured another German victory in this most important European horse race after the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe just one year after Danedream .

Novellist comes from the famous Erlenhofer N-Line. His great-grandmother Narola , who herself had a starter in the German Derby 2012 with Nostro Amico, was bred by the Countess von Batthyány . The dam, Night Lagoon, is the half-sister of the 2005 Derby runner-up, Night Tango , and was a successful horse herself on the racetrack. With victories including the Winter Queen Award (Group III), she managed to achieve a GAG of 92.5. Night Lagoon was covered three times in a row by the German top sire Monsun from 2006 to 2008, but apart from Novellist none of her offspring could produce a performance above average on the racetrack.

At the age of two, Novellist recommended himself with a superior debut win in Düsseldorf for the German Derby 2012. At the age of three, he advanced with superior 6 or 5 length victories at the Metzler Prize in Frankfurt (Group III) and the Union Race in Cologne (Group II) the 17:10 favorites for this race. In the derby itself, however, he was narrowly defeated by the blatant 321:10 outsider Pastorius , who then established himself as an excellent racehorse and was able to outperform novelist in the 2012 Baden Grand Prix . With a win at the Gran Premio Del Jockey Club Italiano in Milan (Group I), Novellist was able to conclude 2012 in a conciliatory manner.

Novellist began 2013 with a start at the Grand Prix of Baden Entrepreneurs (Group II) as part of the Baden Baden spring meeting. He was only just able to beat Waldpark , the Derby winner of 2011, but had to carry 3 kg more than his competitor. Novellist then showed himself in greatly improved form at the € 450,000 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in France, where he dealt with strong international competition with a good length ahead. This success made him a co-favorite for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, the summer highlight for stayers in Europe. Novellist was able to impressively confirm these favorite positions with a superior 5 length victory. He also improved the track record by over 2 seconds. Novellist also proved that, like most of the Monsoon offspring, he can perform at his best not only on soft, but also on firm ground. Novellist could not take part in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe , for which he was considered the favorite , due to illness .

In October 2013 Novellist was sold to the Japanese Shadai Corp. by his breeder Christoph Berglar. Ltd. sold. There it is available to breeders for a stud fee of 4,000,000 yen, i.e. around 30,000 €. At the beginning of April 2014 Novellist was finally elected Galopper of the Year 2013 with 49% of the votes . So far, Novellist has not been very successful in breeding. Despite many options, Novellist has so far only produced two Group III winners, one in Japan and one in Australia. As a result of this weak balance, the initially very high coverage figure has also decreased significantly. If another miracle does not happen, the Novellist must be judged a failure in breeding.
