Nozoe Tetsuo
Nozoe Tetsuo ( Japanese 野 副 鉄 男 ; born May 16, 1902 in Sendai , † April 4, 1996 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese chemist.
Life
Nozoe was already experimenting in his parents' garden shed as a child. He studied at the Imperial University of Tōhoku in Sendai and dealt with the synthesis of thyroxine under the aegis of his doctoral supervisor Majima Rikô .
Later he went to the Imperial University of Taihoku (today National University of Taiwan ) in the Japanese colony of Taiwan , where he first taught as an assistant professor and from 1937 as a full professor. In 1935 he isolated hinokitiol , the first known non-benzoid aromatic compound (it belongs to the tropolones and was obtained from cedar). When the Republic of China occupied the island of Formosa , he stayed there for three more years. In 1948 he became a professor at Tōhoku University. His chemical specialty was the seven-membered tropolones , the synthesis of which he succeeded in 1949.
Motivated by an autograph by Albert Einstein , which he received during Einstein's visit to Japan in 1922, he began to collect other autographs from natural scientists. When he first visited western countries in 1953, an IUPAC congress in Stockholm , he began collecting autographs and other written entries from international chemists. In the following 41 years he was able to collect around 4000 entries, autographs and handwritten chemical formulas in his books on 1,179 pages. The original books are now in the archives of Tōhoku University.
Private
Nozoe was married to Horiuchi Kyoko and had four children. His son Shigeo and daughter Yoko also became chemists. Two granddaughters and one grandson also studied chemistry.
