Nuel Belnap

Nuel D. Belnap Jr. (Born May 1, 1930 in Evanston , Illinois) is an American philosopher and logician .

Life

Nuel Belnap studied at the University of Illinois and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts . Then he moved to Yale University : in 1957 he received a Master of Arts degree and took his doctorate in 1960 . From 1958 to 1960 he worked here as a research assistant (instructor) and from 1960 to 1963 as an assistant professor of philosophy . In 1963 he went to the University of Pittsburgh as an associate professor , where he was promoted to professor in 1966 and held the Alan Ross Anderson chair of philosophy from 1984 until his retirement in 2011. During this time he was also in the fields of sociology , history of science and philosophy and Intelligent Systems operates. He also held visiting professorships in Oxford , Irvine (California) , Bloomington (Indiana) , Padua (Italy) and at the Australian National University . He has been a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1988 . In 2008 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Belnap has worked in various areas of logic and ontology . The logical connections between questions and answers, problems of inference and implication ( relevance logic , Belnap's four-valued logic ), the logic of action and the indeterminism of space and time are some of his topics. He is also co-author of two truth concepts : the prosententialen theory of truth and the revision theory of truth.
