Nuno Guerreiro

Nuno Guerreiro (born September 5, 1972 in Loulé , Portugal ) is a Portuguese singer. His repertoire includes pop songs, soul , baroque music and fados . He also works as a countertenor . He is also known in Japan .

Live and act

Nuno Guerreiro was born in Loulé in the Algarve , the southernmost province of Portugal. When he was sixteen he moved to Lisbon , where he studied singing at the Escola de Dança dance school at the ESTC , the former Conservatório . He was later discovered by the eminent Fado guitarist Carlos Paredes , a master of the Portuguese guitar . During joint appearances with Carlos Paredes, in turn, he was discovered by the singers of the group Ala dos Namorados and integrated into the group as a singer. He has been a permanent member of the ensemble since 1992. In 1998 he had an appearance with Guerreiro at the world exhibition Expo 98 in Lisbon, where he interpreted songs by Peter Gabriel , Cole Porter , Marlene Dietrich and his role model Amália Rodrigues .

In 1999 he released his first solo album "Carta de Amor" with standards in English such as " When the Saints Go Marching In ", " Amazing Grace " and " Greensleeves ". This album with arrangements by the Japanese composer Akira Senju also established his success in Japan. The album also contains a musical interpretation of a poem by Florbela Espanca . Since then he has mainly worked as a solo artist.

The openly homosexual singer was able to win the well-known singer Rui Veloso as a guest artist on his second album . The overall repertoire of Guerreiro includes baroque music - primarily as a countertenor and by Handel and Purcell - but also fados such as “Fado de Cada Um” or R&B music and soul. He appears regularly on music programs on Portuguese television.
