Nunzio Morello

Nunzio Morello (* 1806 in Palermo ; † 1878 ibid) was an Italian sculptor and poet in Sicily .

Life

Under the direction of the neoclassical sculptor Valerio Villareale , he began studying plastic anatomy at the University of Palermo.

As a sculptor, he quickly gained a high reputation in his hometown. In 1838 he set up his statue of Paris in the Orto Botanico . In the same year he created the wooden statues of Ariadne and a Bacchante .

In 1856 he created his marble sculpture of King Philip V of Spain for the Piazza Vittoria in Palermo to replace the monument destroyed during the uprisings of 1848. After Villareale's death, he became a professor of sculpture at the University of Palermo.

In the following years various sculptures were created, such as the tombs for the Tasca family in the Chiesa dei Cappucchini and for the Marchese Hauss in the Chiesa San Francesco di Paola . He also created a bust for Michele Pandolfini and the monument to Giovanni Gorgone in the Chiesa di San Domenico in 1863 .

A bust of Ferdinand II (Sicily) and the important group of figures "Selvaggia Indiana" from 1870 are owned by the Società di Storia Patria in the Museo del Risorgimento in Palermo. The sculpture of Santa Rosalia in the Santuario Santa Rosalia on Monte Pellegrino also comes from Morelli .

The volume of poetry Rime in siciliano dialetto from 1873 is one of his written works . One of his sculptures created in 1870 was accompanied by the poetry in occasione della selvaggia indiana modellata nel 1870 da Nunzio Morello scultore siciliano….
