The San Francesco di Paola is a Renaissance church in Palermo .

Building history

The church dedicated to her was built in the Piazza San Francesco di Paola, according to legend on the site of the tomb of Oliva of Palermo , one of the city saints of Palermo. With the approval of the Senate of Palermo, the church came into the care of the tailors' guild on January 4, 1485 . With the support of Viceroy Ettore Pignatelli , the church was consecrated to San Francesco di Paola on November 19, 1518 . After this consecration was confirmed by Pope Clement VII on March 13, 1525 , the tailors' guild began to rebuild the church with financial support from the nobility and the citizens of Palermo.

facade

Above the main portal of the simple Renaissance facade with a wave gable , the coat of arms with scissors and an inscription indicate the guild of tailors as responsible for the church (DOM MDXCIIII. Perexiguam a sartoribus colebatur, auctam a Minimis conservatur).

The three marble half-figures on the facade represent San Francesco di Paola, Santa Oliva and the Madonna and Child. They were created by Giacomo Gaggini and placed here on September 30, 1536 . A bell tower was added to the right of the facade.

Church interior

Inside the three-aisled, 40 × 11 m church, late Gothic pointed arches connect with the classic round arches of the Renaissance . Under the direction of Fra Mariano Castello da Vicari, all building elements were richly decorated with multicolored marble , partly gilded stucco and frescoes . The frescoes, mostly with scenes from the life of San Francesco di Paola, were created by Vito d'Anna and Zoppo di Gangi around 1700 .

The ciborium in the presbytery is by Michele Messina (1829), the "Adoration of the Shepherds" and the "Birth of John the Baptist" by Zoppo di Gangi . In the chapels of the transept there is the bust of Francesco di Paolo by Vincenzo Gaggini , the tomb for Giuseppe Pignatelli, Duke of Terranova by Lorenzo Pennino and the marble reclining figure of the sleeping poetess Giovanna de Caravelli (d. 1546) by Antonino Gaggini.

Giuseppe d'Alvino painted a panel painting for the chapel of Saints Bartolomeo and Lorenzo in 1601, the altar painting for the chapel of Saint Oliva was by Gaspare Serenario and Vito d'Anna created the fresco “Triumph of Religion” for the sacristy .
